John received his degree in Fine Arts from the University of North Dakota, intaglio (etching) and drawing was his foundation. Asked to design the ponies for A Carousel for Missoula, his volunteer work with the carousel became the transitional point to carving and sculpting. John is serious about art but his art his full of humor. His work runs from dragons to skateboarding birds to rocking critters for children to ride. When he is not in the studio, he is presenting at symposiums or teaching workshops or he may be traveling-visiting quarries, ancient monasteries or cathedrals.
Available for commission work, some of John’s patrons are the Western Montana Clinic, Missoula Pediatric Denistry, The Missoula YMCA and many private families. Customized critters of many types are being ridden by happy children (horses, dragons, giraffes, turtles, slugs and even a rocking poodle). John’s work can be seen daily at A Carousel for Missoula or by appointment at his studio. His work can also be found in private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
